On to the Next Thing

by Michael Yessis on May 5, 2015

May 1 was my final day with Aol. As part of the company’s restructuring, Aol-owned MapQuest—where I was Content Director and Editor-in-Chief—refocused on its core mission.

I’m proud of what my team and I (and some mighty fine freelancers) accomplished. We built an editorial and social media operation from the ground up, essentially launching a startup within the company. We developed loads of fun, useful and engaging original content—text, maps, video, itineraries—for more than 40 million users. Summer Quests, for example. And MLB gameday guides. And every U.S. Interstate, ranked.

Now it’s on to the next thing.

Ideally, that will be another full-time position. If it’s another editorial position in travel, excellent. If not, I have other interests and obsessions, including: news, politics, pop culture, sports, books, television, tech, food, stunt journalism, the future of media and journalism. I know how to launch and grow content sites (see also: World Hum). I can manage a vertical or a staff (see: LinkedIn). I have a long track record of writing and editing high-quality stories, from long form to data-driven to social-friendly shorties. If you’re looking for someone to establish and build your content presence, or to grow an existing publication or vertical, email me. I can help.

In the meantime, I’ll be freelancing a bit and revisiting a few ideas, including a book project. One item on my list is already crossed off: I launched a newsletter. Please subscribe for updates.
